The Right Way to Structure a Meta Ads Account
A well-structured account makes optimization easier and results clearer. Here is the structure we use for every client.
The most common account structure mistake is running prospecting and retargeting in the same campaign. When they share a budget, Meta's algorithm optimizes for the cheapest conversions — which are almost always retargeting. Your prospecting budget gets starved.
Separate them completely. Prospecting campaigns should have their own budget, their own objective, and their own success metrics. Retargeting campaigns should be measured on cost per purchase, not cost per click.
Within prospecting, structure by audience intent rather than by product. One campaign for broad interest targeting, one for lookalike audiences based on your customer list, one for interest-based targeting. This lets you see exactly which audience source produces the best customers.
Use campaign budget optimization sparingly. It works well when you have a clear winner among ad sets, but it can also concentrate budget too quickly on early winners before other ad sets have had a fair test. For new accounts, start with ad set level budgets and move to CBO once you have data.
Name everything consistently. A naming convention like 'Prospecting - Broad - Video Hook A' saves hours of confusion when you are managing multiple campaigns and trying to find what worked.
